Landscape Analysis
Landscape Analysis helps partners understand historic cities not just as collections of buildings, but as environments shaped by climate, topography, water, agriculture, and long‑standing social practices. Through this service, we study how landscapes have evolved and how they can support sustainable, heritage‑led development today.
Our work begins with field observation and data gathering: mapping terrain, vegetation, hydrology, traditional land uses, circulation routes, and sacred or culturally significant places. We combine this with archival maps, aerial and satellite imagery, and oral histories that explain how communities have related to the land across generations. This approach is particularly valuable where rapid urban expansion or environmental stress is putting historic settings under pressure.
We then produce analytical maps and written assessments that clarify a landscape's historical, environmental, cultural, and social significance. For example, we may identify historic irrigation systems that can inspire climate‑resilient water management, traditional planting that protects against erosion, or long‑used processional routes that should be respected in new planning schemes. These findings are presented in accessible formats so that municipal planners, heritage agencies, and community leaders can use them directly in policy and project design.
Landscape Analysis frequently feeds into our Preservation & Restoration and Urban Environment services, guiding where to prioritize interventions, how to route infrastructure without damaging sensitive areas, and where there is potential for cultural tourism or education spaces. For partners, this means decisions rest on evidence rather than short‑term expediency.
By grounding urban projects in careful landscape understanding, we help ensure that preservation projects in Africa respond to environmental realities, honor cultural relationships to land, and build resilience against climate risks. Each analysis becomes a practical tool for aligning heritage conservation, urban growth, and ecological care within and around historic cities.
